UK businesses plan to up their spending on social media marketing in 2010, according to a new study.
The research by Econsultancy and bigmouthmedia highlights that 86 per cent of firms plan to increase spending in the area, while 13 per cent will spend the same sum as in 2009.
However, the study also suggested that many firms are prevented from fully utilising social media by a lack of resources, with over half (54 per cent) of respondents saying that this is their biggest barrier to better engagement with the channel.
Approximately 90 per cent of firms stated that social media is taking up more time internally than a year ago.
Phil Gripton, managing director of bigmouthmedia UK, stated: "While an increasing number of companies are embracing social media, many are struggling to effectively manage their engagement and are consequently failing to make the most of a potentially enormous opportunity."
Michelle Goodall, Econsultancy's social media and online PR consultant, advised marketing professionals looking to embrace social media to "go back to basics".
A recent poll by BtoB magazine highlighted that social media is also becoming an increasingly important tool for business-to-business firms, with six in ten companies questioned saying they will increase spending on the channel next year.
