One in five employees unhappy at work, says survey

One in five workers are unhappy in their current jobs, according to new research conducted by energy comparison site UK Power.

Asking respondents what aspect of their lives they would most like to switch, the firm found that a quarter of workers are unhappy in their current job, while one in five are unhappy with their chosen career.

According to the research, dissatisfaction with their daily role (52 per cent) is the number one reason people would like to switch jobs. This is followed by salary (44 per cent) and level of seniority (20 per cent). A total of 13 per cent reported that they wanted to change their job because they dislike their boss.

However, while these workers are unhappy, it means that four in five employees are happy at work. This shows that job satisfaction is achievable, but it is important for companies to implement retention strategies in order to target that one-fifth of employees who are unhappy in their jobs.

Ensuring workers are happy begins at the recruitment stage. Hiring managers should make sure they are completely transparent and open about what candidates will be doing on a day-to-day basis, so there is no disappointment later on. Managers should also be included in the interview process, so candidates will be able to gauge whether they will have a good working relationship with their boss.

Half of respondents to UK Power’s survey said they thought changing careers would improve the quality of their life, while one-third said doing so would improve their finances. Some 26 per cent said they thought their mental health would improve if they were in a different role.

However, despite being aware of what advantages changing jobs can have, it is not easy for many employees. Lack of finances available to support a career change (39 per cent) was the top reason given for staying in a job, while 31 per cent of respondents said there was no better alternative. Meanwhile, 26 per cent said they were scared they would regret their decision.

Nick Heath, head of insight at UK Power, confirmed this, saying: “Having the resources available to help make informed decisions about changing any aspect of your life, however big or small, can be the difference between being unhappy, and having something to smile about.”
