HR managers need to ensure they create "mentally healthy workplaces", it has been claimed.
Sue Baker, director of Time to Change, pointed out that a quarter of people have mental health issues and it is down to employers to help them cope.
HR departments that are able to engender a culture of support will also get the best out of their workers, she stated.
Ms Baker said: "Many leading companies have found that making a strategic commitment to the mental wellbeing of their workforce not only has benefits for their staff but also benefits their bottom line, improving productivity and staff retention."
Time to Change campaigns to raise awareness on mental health issues and has just launched a new website aimed at helping employers and staff to work together to tackle such problems.
Recently, a study by Warwick University revealed that 13.5 million working days a year are lost because of stress.
