UK recruitment sector 'deserves a gold medal'

Given ongoing economic problems in the UK and the eurozone, the recruitment industry deserves special praise for the way it has overcome an array of challenges.
That is the view of Kevin Green, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, who argued that the employment market in the UK has defied all logic in the way it has tackle such problems.
The economy has, of course, slipped back into recession in recent months, despite the government announcing a change to the top rate of tax and the Bank of England's quantitative easing programme, which has seen tens of billions of pounds enter circulation.
But while Mr Green extoled the virtues of the recruitment industry for the way it has responded to these issues, he suggested that this run of strong performances may be about to come to an end.
He cited the fact that the number of permanent appointments has fallen for a second month while temporary employment has seen an eighth consecutive month of contraction.
“What must be emphasised, though, is that employers are still hiring. In fact, the number of vacancies has grown, but fragile confidence means they are taking longer to make decisions about appointments and the whole process of recruiting is slowing down,” he observed.
“This slow-down is likely to be exacerbated further by thousands of school and university leavers joining the jobs market over the next month.”
The government, though, is hopeful that the Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide the economy with a much-needed boost, helping to boost the tourism industry as well as the retail sector.
Currently, there are more than 10,000 volunteers helping out at London 2012. And while a sizeable proportion of these will soon find themselves registered unemployed, the government is hopeful that the once-in-a-lifetime experience will improve their long-term job prospects.
