UK jobs market 'to be more affected than US by public cuts'

UK jobs market 'to be more affected than US by public...The labour market outlook for the UK and US is different due to the public-private sector balance, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has claimed.

According to the organisation, the high number of British professionals employed within the struggling public sector is set to affect the domestic jobs market more than across the Atlantic.

Some 21 per cent of UK workers are currently in public sector employment, compared to 17 per cent in the US, meaning the threat of impending spending cuts is weighing particularly heavily on British shores.

Gerwyn Davies, public policy adviser at CIPD, said the jobs market in both countries looks set to drift in polar opposite directions, as hundreds of thousands of public sector job cuts are made in the next few years.

"This will have a greater impact on women than men, who make up more than a third of the total public sector workforce compared to just one-sixth of the private sector," he added.

"Until now, they have benefited hugely from the rapid expansion of the public sector since 1997," he added.

In more positive news, February's Recruitment and Employment Confederation/KMPG Report on Jobs has pointed to further jobs growth in the UK private sector.
