UK businesses urged to embrace eID

IT News |  01/11/2011
UK businesses urged to embrace eIDBCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, has called on UK business to engage with electronic ID (eID) processes, which can support international growth.

The organisation's security arm believes the UK should be more influential in the global initiative to enable the internet to aid development and bring economic benefits to all.

It says eID can improve the security of domestic and cross border transactions, but more companies and organisations need to embrace the electronic identity technique.

Louise Bennett, chair of BCS Security, said the 6th Internet Governance Forum saw some progress in how to enable the internet to aid development, but this is still in the discussion stage.

She described eID as a vital enabler, playing a major role in security and commerce as, in the age of the internet, identity assurers support identity requestors without infringing the privacy and rights of the individual.

"This really is the moment that business, especially financial services and phone companies, needs to make its voice heard to ensure that the emerging solutions are pragmatic," Ms Bennett added.

They must build on the successes of federated trust in international banking, international use of credit and debit cards and international use of phones, she claimed.

Ms Bennett said these are all ideas where individual consumers and businesses have a relationship with local or global companies whom they trust, and who are able to carry out transactions using the web.

"There is a real opportunity for UK business - both users and solution providers," she added. "BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, intends to be influential from an early stage in this global initiative."

Last month, BCS reported that young people in the UK see the value of qualifications and IT jobs, raising hopes that more may choose to enter the sector in the future.
