Touch typing 'saves times and avoids injury'

Employers may be able to increase the productivity of their IT professionals by teaching them how to touch type.
BCS, The Chartered Institute of IT, explained that being able to use a keyboard efficiently can save time in the workplace and also help computer-based workers to avoid injury.
The organisation said that whether staff are working, searching the web, using instant messaging or contacting friends and family, touch typing skills can be of benefit.
Martyn Lambert, director of qualifications at the institute, noted that fast and accurate keyboard skills "can make a world of difference" in how people use a PC.
"When you consider the amount of time you spend [typing], being able to touch type can seriously save you time and more importantly help prevent repetitive strain injury," he stated.
Mr Lambert said this is skill traditionally associated with secretaries and personal assistants, but touch typing now has a much wider application given the importance of computing in the workplace.
"Today it is something we all need and can really benefit from," he said.
"It can transform the skills of anyone using a PC, even those who’ve typed with two fingers for years."
BCS, The Chartered Institute of IT, offers the e-type qualification, which provides an online training program in touch typing, helping professionals to ditch the less efficient 'hunt and peck' technique.
This is where typists look for the letters or characters they wish to use on the keyboard, and use just two fingers to type.
The qualification is designed for flexible delivery and is available from centres across the UK, helping employers to improve the skills of their employees.
It teaches touch typing in ten easy-to-follow lessons with interactive exercises and handy hints to aid progression.
