Talent management 'is a long-term issue'

HR staff are maintaining a long-term view of their firms' talent management strategies, a new study has suggested.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) looked at ten leading UK firms to see how they have adapted their plans in light of the recession.
According to the CIPD, there has been an increased focus on ensuring that existing staff are happy and engaged.
However, the companies looked at are also keen to make sure that their plans are sustainable.
Claire McCartney, resourcing and talent planning adviser at the CIPD, suggested that all businesses should follow this lead.
She said: "Organisations should be clear about how any new measures fit with their long term talent strategies and should avoid any temptation to abandon some practices that are working well when the upturn emerges."
Recently, a study by Boston Consulting Group and the European Association of People Management warned that firms which do not plan their talent management strategies in advance could fall victim to a skills shortage in a few years.
