Staff volunteering 'a good way to develop skills'Staff volunteering is a cost-effective way of boosting people's skills, it has been claimed.

Research conducted by Corporate Citizenship, which saw a number of City employees volunteering in schools and colleges, found that such methods saved businesses up to £1,000 per person when compared to traditional training methods.

In addition, staff developed a wide range of new skills and competencies in areas such as personal effectiveness, communication and ability to coach others.

"Volunteering requires employees to step outside their normal working role and build relations with people who have a very different world view from their own," said Andrew Wilson, director of Corporate Citizenship and the report's main author.

"Employees report that moving outside their comfort zone in this way is extremely useful in both developing their skills and transferring these skills back into the workplace."

Earlier this month, Volunteering England stated that volunteering can help people improve their wellbeing as well as preparing them for the workplace.
