Social media 'a background checking tool for HR'

HR News |  29/01/2010
Social media 'a background checking tool for HR'More than two-thirds of all human resources (HR) professionals now run internet searches on job applicants, it has been reported.

According to research conducted by Microsoft, one in four HR employees has rejected a candidate's application on the basis of their social networking profile.

However, the study revealed that just 37 per cent of people see it as their responsibility to protect their online reputation.

Cliff Evans, head of privacy and security at Microsoft UK, said reputation and information sharing as a privacy issue "should be a major concern for individuals".

He added: "Think carefully about the image you are portraying. Taking a few simple steps today can help to build the online image you'll need tomorrow."

Earlier this month, the Scala Group reported that 62 per cent of firms now include the HR function when undertaking top-level strategic planning.
