SEO dangers 'must be recognised and avoided'

SEO dangers 'must be recognised and avoided'Marketers have been warned against falling into the common traps associated with search engine optimisation (SEO).

David Hollands-Hurst, an SEO consultant at Pixl8 Interactive, highlighted a number of practices which may count against firms' websites and result in lower search engine rankings.

Failing to update sites with fresh and relevant content, neglecting keywords and cutting corners with setup and registration processes can all prove detrimental, he claimed.

However, Mr Hollands-Hurst noted that the biggest error a firm can make in terms of SEO is to base their site around an existing link template - essentially copying another site's recipe for success.

Although this may yield impressive short-term results, it will lead to reputational damage in the long run, he stated.

"It is best to get some professional advice to make sure there is no possibility of the search engines getting confused with how your site is structured," Mr Hollands-Hurst added.

"If at a loss on what to write, simply go back to the last few questions you were asked from customers or potential customers and create a FAQ section or blog out of it."

According to Search Engine Watch, each website should be considered a separate entity for SEO purposes, meaning a one-size-fits-all approach is not appropriate.
