SEO and email 'most effective marketing...Search engine optimisation (SEO) and email marketing are the two channels seen as most effective by those working in the field, according to a new study.

The 2009 Advertising Effectiveness Survey, conducted by Forbes magazine, revealed that 48 per cent of chief marketing officers (CMOs) believe that SEO is a good way to generate sales.

It also revealed that 46 per cent of respondents consider email marketing to be an effective method of getting their message across to consumers.

However, not all technological advances came in for praise, with 81 per cent of CMOs stating they are concerned about a potential customer backlash against campaigns based on people's online habits.

It also found that 82 per cent of respondents are concerned that the method might be ineffective.

Yesterday, a study by e-Dialog found that firms could be missing a trick by not asking people to provide their email addresses when sending out direct market material.

The research found that 43 per cent of people would be willing to provide such information when replying to a mail shot.
