Recession failed to dissuade workers from taking career breaks

Recession failed to dissuade workers from taking career...HR departments have still been receiving career break requests despite the economic downturn, it has been suggested.

Rachel Morgan-Trimmer, founder of thecareerbreaksite.com, said the recession had little bearing on people's plan to take time away from the workplace.

She said that as well as seeking volunteer work and travelling, many people have chosen to look for employment abroad over the last couple of years.

Ms Morgan-Trimmer noted that although some workers may have had a genuine fear of losing their job if they embark on a career break, they have recognised the mutual benefits provided by such a venture.

Career breaks can help employers reduce costs during difficult times, while enabling their staff to gain additional life experience and potentially enhance their skills base, she added.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the UK recession drew to a close in the final quarter of 2009, when the economy grew by 0.1 per cent.
