Recession 'could reverse equality progress'

The recession could reverse the progress made so far on workplace equality, it has been claimed.
According to new research from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), 44 per cent of male employees think that it is not unusual to see women in top jobs, compared to just 23 per cent of women.
It was also revealed that 39 per cent of women think that female staff members still have to work harder and longer to get to the top.
Following the research, PwC suggested that as the recession prompts companies to offer fewer promotions and pay rises, women are having to fight even harder for their positions.
"Job insecurity could reverse the progress we've made in equality because it breeds presenteeism, people protecting their own work, and a tougher fight to the top for all," commented Sarah Churchman, director of diversity at PwC.
Speaking this week, prime minister Gordon Brown said it is "completely unacceptable" that women are absent from the boards of some of the UK's biggest companies.
