REC welcomes Tory pledge on National Insurance

REC welcomes Tory pledge on National InsuranceThe Conservative Party's proposal to scrap the planned one per cent rise in National Insurance Contributions may have been criticised by political opponents, but it has been welcomed by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

In a live TV debate last night, shadow chancellor George Osborne was slammed by current incumbent Alistair Darling and the Liberal Democrat's treasury spokesperson Vince Cable over the plan.

Prime minister Gordon Brown has also described the pledge as "a panic measure" from the opposition.

However, Kevin Green, chief executive of the industry representative body, said cancelling the increase ? which is due to come into effect in April 2011 ? for lower paid workers will help boost employment rates in the UK.

He commented: "The recruitment industry is at the sharp end of the labour market. Any increase on employers' contributions to National Insurance will result in onward costs in the supply of the one million temporary and contract workers we find jobs for every week."

Mr Green said all political parties should be actively looking for incentives to get people into work, rather than "putting up barriers to raising employment levels".

"REC will continue to push for the complete removal of the National Insurance Contributions increase," he stated.
