Opportunities for graduates in UK IT sector

Demand for talented computing graduates is continuing to rise in the UK, according to one consultancy.
Laura Lodwick, operations manager at BJSS, noted that the number of computing graduates is falling, meaning employers are on the lookout for strong candidates.
She explained that industry operators are seeking talented professionals with an interest in developing and rising to the top of their peer group.
"There is still the same number of jobs, if not more, but we are being told that the number of graduates has been falling," Ms Lodwick stated.
As such, jobseeking will potentially be getting easier for people leaving university.
"What you will always find with IT is that we will still look for the best," she added.
"The people who still do it are the people who have got a real interest in it and a real passion, they are able to talk about it being their interest."
Ms Lodwick said it is important for graduates to fully understand the role they are applying for and ensure they tailor their CV accordingly.
"Also make sure that your covering letter definitely addresses how you meet those requirements," she advised.
"IT is always moving so you do need to be able to keep abreast of technology and be able to learn. Anything that shows that you are a self-starter and willing to learn for yourself is going to be useful when going for a job."
Colin Bateson, senior developer at BJSS, echoed the comments, noting that many IT operators are offering new employment opportunities.
But the graduates who tend to secure the best jobs are those who are passionate about working in the sector, he stated.
"When we bring graduates in, if they have been on our website and know a bit about the company, that is always something that we look for," Mr Bateson added.
"If they have got an interest in the company and it is not just something that they have applied for then it is definitely a plus."
