Firms must 'step up to the plate' and make use of online marketing, it has been claimed.
David Teague, managing director of Prospects & Profits Business Consultants, explained that in the internet age, firms which are not easily found on the web are at a major disadvantage.
"If your customers can't find you within a minute on the internet, your business is going to languish on the sidelines, whilst your competitors gain the edge," he said.
Simply having an internet presence is no longer enough, and marketing should be used to get the most out of it, Mr Teague added.
Websites can also help firms gain ground on their larger rivals, he stated.
Last week, a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers predicted that the internet will account for a third of all advertising spending by 2013.
According to the firm, this expansion will be driven by an increase in the number of people who are able to get online.
