New Year's Honours highlight importance of IT

People working in the IT and computing sector have a genuine opportunity to make their mark on UK business and society as a whole.
Reflecting this, several leading industry figures were recognised in the Queen's New Year's honours list for their contribution to technological advancement.
BCS, The Chartered Institute of IT members Ursula Martin, Alan Bundy and Bob Assirati were all made Commanders of the Order of the British Empire.
And Beti Williams, the recently retired director of ITWales at Swansea University, was awarded an MBE.
Ursula Martin is professor of computer science and recently vice-principal of science and engineering at Queen Mary, University of London.
A volunteer for BCS and a supporter of Women in Computing Research, she received a CBE for services to computer science.
Alan Bundy CBE - professor of automated reasoning at the University of Edinburgh - is also as vice-president of the BCS Academy.
"I am deeply honoured to receive this award as I have dedicated all of my working life to computing science," he said.
"I am passionate about the work that the BCS Academy is doing; telling the world that IT this is an exciting, intellectual discipline and not just about using office tools and the internet."
Mr Bundy thanked his colleagues, attributing many of his successes to their efforts and teamwork.
The third new CBE, Bob Assirati, Is currently vice-president and chair of the Products and Services Board at BCS.
During a distinguished career, he has also been a member of the BCS Nominations Committee, the Government Relations Group, the Engineering and Technology Strategic Panel and the Products and Services Board.
Beti Williams was awarded an MBE for her campaigning work to encourage more women and girls to take up careers in computing, science and engineering.
