More female professionals should consider a career in IT, it has been claimed.
BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, wants to see more women working in the sector, and with this in mind, has launched a new online resource.
The institute has joined iTunes U, a dedicated area of the service that offers free content from leading educational institutions.
Films, debates and written interviews with key women in IT are now available to teachers, schools and students, BCS explained.
Among the experts featured are Ada Lovelace, Hedy Lamarr and Karen Spärck Jones, who famously commented that computing is "far too important to be left to men".
Content is divided into several collections including information pioneers, digital art, IT in the creative industries, visual arts and technology, cyber warfare, entrepreneurs and computing education.
Materials can be downloaded for free to a PC or Mac, iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
BCS hopes the online resources will stimulate further discussion and debate about the importance of women in IT.
Gillian Arnold, chair of the BCS Women Specialist Group, said women currently represent just 18 per cent of the IT profession.
"So we particularly want to get young women interested in the industry," she stated.
"These resources feature female role models which we hope will help promote IT as a potential career to female students."
Women who choose a career in IT are likely to find themselves working in an interesting, dynamic and highly motivated environment, Ms Arnold added.
"We hope these resources go some way towards illustrating this," she stated.
