Marketers urged to recognise social media dangers

Marketing professionals should be aware of the potential data security risks when using social networking sites, it has been suggested.
With the popularity of sites such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook ever growing, marketers have been understandably keen to tap into social media to engage with a growing audience.
However, as more people have joined online communities, the risks to those using them have increased, according to Trend Micro's senior security advisor Rik Ferguson.
He noted that "criminals follow the money", and there are lots of potential targets on online communities.
Mr Ferguson commented that social networks "are based on trust", but marketing professionals cannot afford to be naive with confidential business information potentially at stake.
A recent finding by M86 Security backs up Mr Ferguson's claims ? the firm says there has been a significant increase in spam attacks on social networking sites over the last few months.
