Marketers 'cannot ignore social media'

Marketing professionals are increasingly recognising the value of communicating with their customers, stakeholders and clients in real time, it has been claimed.
Nathan McDonald, managing partner at digital consultancy We Are Social, claimed that more businesses are looking to tap into the market potential of sites such as Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.
"Communications teams and marketing teams, and even customer service teams, are starting to adapt and are realising that at the very least they need to learn about these platforms and understand them," he claimed.
Mr McDonald said marketers must be prepared to fully embrace social media, even if this results in making some early strategic mistakes.
"The approach to Twitter should also bear in mind your blogging or Facebook strategy and all of that should follow the same tone of voice and communication strategy that you deploy for PR, advertising and even direct marketing," he claimed.
Last week, marketing commentator Simm Jenkins told ClickZ that social media and email marketing campaigns should be integrated to maximise their impact on consumers.
