A television advertisement promoting abortion advisory services has drawn more than 370 complaints, it has been revealed.
The Marie Stopes ad, which aired for the first time on Monday night on Channel 4, is now set to be investigated by the Advertising Standards Agency.
While it did not explicitly refer to abortion, simply questioning "Are you late?" in reference to a woman having missed her period, the ad has been widely condemned by faith groups and pro-life organisations.
A review will now be conducted to see if the promotion breached the UK's advertising code.
Speaking to Campaign Live, Reed Smith advertising law partner Marina Palomba commented: "The absolute right of commercial freedom of expression is not recognised in UK law in the same way that it is in the USA.
"Many products or services are, of course, restricted as to what they can do when it comes to advertising."
She said that in such a sensitive area as abortion, "there will always be those who object to the right to advertise".
