Major firms 'seeking 2:1 degrees for graduate...A number of major UK firms are planning to increase their headcounts over the coming year, but are seeking a higher level of educational achievement from applicants.

According to the Times, firms such as Jaguar Land Rover, IBM and Tesco plan to take on more graduates in 2010, but a 2:1 degree is now the entry requirement as competition hots up in the jobs market.

The newspaper notes that this threshold was "once confined to elite City firms", but is becoming a common standard across all publicly listed companies.

It notes that PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is set to ramp up its accountancy recruitment drive in 2010, taking on an extra 100 staff compared to last year, while IBM intends to extend its IT recruitment programme by around 50 per cent.

Former Monetary Policy Committee member David Blanchflower told the Times that graduate joblessness was becoming "a national crisis".

He stated: "A spell of unemployment is bad when young and the longer it is, the worse it is."

Last week, PwC chairman and senior partner Ian Powell informed the European Business Review of the firm's accountancy recruitment plans for the coming year, claiming that it remains committed to hiring as it plans for the future.
