Life satisfaction 'improved by IT access'

Life satisfaction 'improved by IT access'IT access has a genuinely positive impact on people's lives, according to a new study conducted by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.

According to the organisation, computers have an enabling and empowering role in people's lives by increasing their sense of freedom and control.

Social scientist Michael Willmott, the study's author, claimed people with IT access are more satisfied with life, even when their level of income is taken into account.

Women and those on lower incomes or with fewer educational qualifications benefit most from access to and use of IT, the study indicated.

Elizabeth Sparrow, president of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, commented: "The 'information society', as we see it, should be a place where information technology is used to improve life satisfaction and support our individual and collective goals, not to erode or undermine them."

She claimed that the IT profession "should be here to serve that purpose".

Claire Goodwin, sales director for womenintechnology.co.uk, recently suggested that access to a computer increases the chance of an individual making progress in their career.
