A minor reduction in the UK unemployment rate was witnessed during the final quarter of 2009, it has been reported.
The number of people out of work reduced by just 3,000 between October and December 2009, the Office for National Statistics revealed.
Accordingly, the unemployment rate remained at around 2.46 million for the final quarter of the year.
This was unchanged at 7.8 per cent, with the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance rising by 23,500 to 1.64 million in January.
Howard Archer, chief UK and European economist at IHS Global Insight, said the unemployment figure was "worryingly high".
The 23,500 jump in the claimant count was "a reality check" after a dip in the number of people claiming benefits at the end of last year, he claimed.
Between September and November 2009, the UK unemployment rate fell by 7,000.
