IT professionals 'should explain web restrictions to staff'

IT professionals 'should explain web restrictions to...Businesses should always offer an explanation to employees if they are forced to restrict access to certain websites, it has been claimed.

Perry Carpenter, research director at IT consultancy Gartner, claimed that IT professionals should take the opportunity to engage in conversation with the workforce about their browsing habits.

This can be an excellent way to educate staff about IT security dangers and limit the potential risks they pose to their employer by accessing infected websites, he claimed.

Mr Carpenter noted that the vast majority of employees use their organisations' web connections in good faith, so it is far better to tell them why certain restrictions are in place than simply block domains anonymously.

"Tell them why [a site] blocked, why it's a bad thing and what types of virus typically occur on those pages," he urged.

"You could also list your policy, you could give quizzes, you could do a number of other things."

Last week, Luis Corrons, technical director for Panda Security, claimed that online crime is becoming increasingly sophisticated, meaning that businesses must be on their guard against all types of web threats.
