IT offshoring 'can create domestic jobs'

IT offshoring 'can create domestic jobs'Changes are needed in the British IT profession in order to take advantage of new opportunities arising from offshoring, it has been claimed.

In a video debate hosted by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, a panel of industry experts discussed the impact of offshoring on UK IT staff.

The participants concluded that offshoring does not necessarily mean the UK is set to lose vast numbers of IT related jobs.

Instead, they agreed that successful offshoring requires a highly skilled core team onshore and as a result, sees the creation of new roles within the domestic IT sector.

The panel noted that many people are concerned by the current trend for offshoring.

But the experts said that by taking action now, the UK can develop a strong IT profession that meets future business needs and contributes to the well-being of the UK economy.

Elizabeth Sparrow, a former president of BCS, noted that companies may offshore without a real understanding of the input they need from IT experts to define, manage and produce strategies.

"There is a misguided belief for some companies that they need no IT expertise internally," she added.

"There is also a danger that we try to cling onto jobs as they exist today."

However, Ms Sparrow said offshoring has not stopped evolving and professionals need to look forward to the job opportunities that will develop tomorrow for IT professionals.
