The mainstream adoption of IT systems in the home and workplace has led to "tremendous changes" in the UK over the last few years, it has been claimed.
Dr Vanessa Pittard, director of e-strategy at technology promotion agency Becta, claimed that leisure, commercial and public services have all been significantly altered by developments in IT.
Speaking at the Westminster Education Forum Keynote Seminar - ICT at school and in the home, she claimed the UK is "on the verge of truly ubiquitous computing".
"Certainly we are now going from technology in the home to computing anywhere we want it, and services anywhere you [desire]," she added.
Dr Pittard said the government is aiming for all schools to become IT-enabled, so that new generations are able benefit from computing innovations as they grow and learn.
"We're starting to see a true realisation of the benefits of technology," she claimed.
Last week, Paul Richens, proposition manager at broadband provider Eclipse Internet, claimed that the development of high-speed services will open up new opportunities for businesses and consumers.
