IT departments 'could find emissions scrutinised'

IT departments 'could find emissions scrutinised'IT departments could find that their carbon emissions come under scrutiny from environmental campaigners in the future, it has been claimed.

According to Mark O'Neill, the author behind Green IT for Sustainable Business Practice: An ISEB Foundation Guide, activists could one day campaign outside data centres and company headquarters in the same way they do airports.

"CIOs should really be investigating what carbon emissions their organisation is producing, and also be up-to-date with what legislation may affect them, such as the UK's Climate Change Act 2008," he said in a British Computer Society podcast.

He added that they should be setting themselves targets for lowering their organisation's carbon footprint.

However, despite the increased focus on companies' emissions from campaigners, Mr O'Neill suggests that many firms are putting green initiatives to one side, in part because they are not sure what they should be doing to tackle the issue.

Earlier this month, it was reported that there has been an 11.2 per cent drop in carbon emissions produced by companies in the European Union taking part in the Emissions Trading Scheme.
