Internet Explorer 8 now leads the browser market

Internet Explorer 8 has become the world's most popular web browser, it has been reported.
According to NetMarketShare, the latest version has now superseded the previous market leaders, Internet Explorers 6 and 7.
The firm put Internet Explorer 8's share of the browser market, as of January 2010, at 22.31 per cent, placing it marginally ahead of Internet Explorer 6 (20.07 per cent) and Firefox 3.5 (17.10 per cent).
Cliff Saran, managing editor of Computer Weekly magazine, said the latest version of Internet Explorer may have received a market share advantage by being shipped with Windows 7.
He also explained that Windows users have been able to obtain the browser through Microsoft's automated update service.
"It doesn't surprise me that it is popular," Mr Saran added.
However, he said there are "some good alternatives", claiming that Firefox has less security issues because fewer people use it, and Google Chrome looks "promising".
