HR 'should support flexible working schemes'

Businesses can both reduce costs and increase productivity levels by embracing flexible working schemes, it has been claimed.
BT Workstyle director David Dunbar told PublicNet that both staff and their employers can benefit from non-traditional working arrangements, meaning HR departments should be willing to promote their uptake.
He suggested that many professionals enjoy working in their own home, helping them to become up to 20 per cent more productive.
From a business perspective, Mr Dunbar noted that home working schemes can help companies to reduce rental costs, bills and other expenditure.
He explained that BT had seen the benefits of flexible working first-hand, and fully supports employees who wish to work away from the office.
Riverbed Technology's director of marketing and alliances Mark Lewis claimed recently that modern technology can enable employees to replicate their office space in their own home.
Some people find they work more effectively at home as there are fewer distractions, he stated.
