The majority of private sector workers still expect a pay rise that will be the same or higher than it was in 2009, a new study has indicated.
Research conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) indicates that 60 per cent of such workers are expecting a salary increment, compared to 51 per cent in the public sector.
The study found that over the next 12 months, bullish private sector workers expect their wages to increase by three per cent.
CIPD reward adviser Charles Cotton said workers believe the economy will improve in 2010 and are "hopeful" their employer will be able to "share the success with them".
He added: "While most private sector workers predict that they will get a pay rise next year, over one in four do not think that this will be the case, focused in hard hit economic sectors such as construction and manufacturing."
According to the Office for National Statistics, average earnings dropped by more than one per cent in the third quarter of this year, compared with the same three months in 2008.
