HR 'can use part-time work to reduce costs'

HR professionals may be able to limit redundancies by offering part-time working hours to some employees.
According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), many workers would rather see a reduction in the number of salaried hours they work than lose their job altogether.
From a HR perspective, this can help reduce labour costs in the short term, while retaining valuable skills and experiences within the organisation.
John Philpott, chief economic advisor for the CIPD, said part-time working can "alleviate" the full impacts of a downturn for many people.
However, he claimed this is not an option for many people in the long term, unless they are supported by another household income.
"It would largely depend upon the strength of economic recovery and how long it takes for the jobs market to get back to normal," Mr Philpott claimed.
The number of people assuming part-time roles initially began to increase in the first quarter of 2009, three years before the start of the recession, official figures indicate.
