Government urged to invest in rural high-speed broadband

The government has a responsibility to invest in areas unlikely to receive high-speed broadband via the private sector, it has been claimed.
According to a spokesperson for the Internet Services Providers' Association, many rural and isolated communities could be left out of the new, digital Britain due to the costs involved in hooking them up to the national high-speed internet.
"Government should focus on encouraging investment in high-speed broadband and to help create a competitive market in these areas," he stated.
"In the small minority of areas where the market may not deliver, the ISPA would welcome government efforts to ensure that no one is digitally excluded."
The spokesperson said that faster broadband speeds are creating a wealth of opportunities for businesses and consumers, and allowing public services to be made available on demand.
However, he expressed the view that these benefits should not simply be limited to people living in urban centres.
BT is currently investing up to £2.5 billion upgrading telephone exchanges around the UK to support next-generation broadband services.
