Government 'must continue to help the jobs market'

Government 'must continue to help the jobs market'The government must be prepared to support the employment market if it wishes to see a sustained recovery, according to one expert.

Roger Tweedy, director of research at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), said the jobs market has shown positive signs of recovery for several months, but realism is needed over how quickly the economy can grow.

He claimed that the road back towards full employment will be "slow", meaning practical support for job-seekers is needed in what will remain a competitive labour market.

"The government must also focus on practical measures for helping business grow in order to further stimulate demand for staff," he stated.

Earlier this week, Tom Hadley, director of external relations at the REC, claimed that both permanent and temporary jobs opportunities are emerging as the economy pulls out of recession.

However, he noted that some employers remained cautious over the future outlook, and are likely to expand their workforce gradually at best.
