Government 'determined to keep working time concession'

The government has vowed to retain Britain's opt-out to the Working Time Directive, as the European Commission launches another assault on practices within the domestic labour market.
Just last year, EU attempts to remove the concession to the 48-hour working week ended in failure, but the commission is again set to press for reform of employee rights.
However, a spokesperson for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said the UK government is committed to allowing people choice over their working hours.
He stated that "millions of people are better off" because of their flexibility to work longer hours, and ministers will continue to resist any attempt to remove this right.
The government's stance has been welcomed by the British Retail Consortium, with the organisation's business director Jane Milne describing the pledge as "good news for British workers".
In addition, Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, claimed the opt-out is needed to help the UK reduce its significant budget deficit.
