Flexible working rights 'can boost employee sentiment'

HR departments may be able to improve employee morale by allowing more people to work flexibly, it has been reported.
According to research conducted by the Government Equalities Office, 53 per cent of working parents feel their job prevents them spending the amount of time they would like with their children.
Some 59 per cent of employees in this category believe flexible working rights would improve staff morale, while 40 per cent think enhanced opportunities in this area could help limit absenteeism.
The study found that many working parents are afraid to make flexible working requests, assuming it may give the wrong impression to their employers.
Almost a third of those interviewed (32 per cent) expressed the view that seeking a non-standard working arrangement may mark them out as uncommitted to their job.
Michelle Singleton, assistant policy officer for UNISON, dismissed suggestions that flexible working can negatively impact upon productivity.
She claimed that those organisations which have embraced the concept are now "reaping the benefits".
