Flexible working 'can be used to motivate'

HR News |  25/06/2009
Flexible working 'can be used to motivate'HR managers can use flexible working to help motivate people during the recession, according to one expert.

Andrew McGrath, commercial director at ntl:Telewest Business, explained that while not all firms can allow people to work from home, they can use technology to make the lives of their employees easier, something that could be vital in the recession.

"Companies under financial pressure can find it difficult to keep their staff motivated and loyal, especially if wages and bonuses are frozen, but taking action to help them strike a better work-life balance can help remedy this," Mr McGrath said.

His comments follow research by ntl:Telewest Business which found that 69 per cent of FTSE 100 listed firms offer workers more flexible working options than the legally required minimum.

Recently, a separate study by Orange revealed that 72 per cent of firms in the UK think that allowing people some degree of flexibility in the way they work increases office morale.
