Employees at firms which offer flexible working are happier, according to new research.
A study conducted by telecoms firm Orange has revealed that 72 per cent of businesses in the UK think that offering such working practices boosts morale, while half think it increases productivity.
Paul Tollet, Orange UK vice-president of business, said: "It's great that over half the UK working population is able to take advantage of flexible working. But the fact that over 35 per cent of employers have yet to consider it is surprising, particularly when the benefits are well acknowledged."
The study also found that 63 per cent of businesses in the UK now offer some form of flexible working.
Firms in Sheffield lead the way on the issue, with a third of companies in the city offering their employees such an option.
Recently, a study by consultancy firm Avaya found that 67 per cent of people think those who are allowed to work flexibly are happier in their jobs than those who are not.
