Firms urged to improve website security

UK firms need to take greater care over website security, it has been claimed.
Writing for Econsultancy, Patricio Robles noted that most websites are likely to store sensitive information which should be kept private at all times.
However, he suggested that firms are potentially running the risk of data breaches by failing to secure their web portals.
As well as managing users and permissions, and applying firewalls, website managers should ensure they store private information ? particularly customers' details ? in an offline environment, Mr Robles said.
He commented: "New security threats are always emerging, which means you can't treat your security as a 'do it once and forget about it' task.
"From staying knowledgeable about security-related issues to regular audits, security should be top-of-mind on a daily basis."
According to PayPal's head of UK risk management Garreth Griffith, website security is becoming more important all the time, especially since consumers are increasingly willing to do business over the internet.
