Firms 'should not overlook ethics when investing in IT'

IT ethics policies should be integral to all UK firms, according to a new report.
The Institute of Business Ethics (IBE) claims in a new paper that by reviewing approaches and attitudes towards the use of IT, firms can begin to operate more efficiently.
According to the organisation, a number of common issues, dilemmas and challenges occur when firms are considering investing in technology which may compromise an organisation's ethical standing.
Consequently, the IBE claims it is important to understand the impacts such deployments may have on employees, management and business practices.
Bob Harvey, chair of the British Computer Society (BCS) Ethics Strategic Panel, told Recruiter that there is currently "little guidance" for businesses on the role played by information systems in meeting their ethical aims.
"BCS has welcomed this opportunity to work with the IBE and to bridge the 'technology gap' in aligning business ethics with business systems," he said.
John White, president of Ireland's Institute of Certified and Public Accountants, recently claimed that ethics is also central to accountancy, as reported by the Irish Examiner.
