Firms 'must invest in HR'

Employees do not recognise the importance of HR but this is no reason for firms to reduce investment in the function, a new study has suggested.
Research by the European Leadership Programme (ELP) found that only five per cent of staff think HR is vital to a business's survival.
However, Ashley Ward, founder of the ELP, warned that employees would only notice the value the HR department adds to a firm when it stops working properly.
He said: "Organisations need to keep investing in HR. Your team may not recognise the role that HR plays within the company every day but they do realise when it's lacking and their motivation wanes."
The study also found that 42 per cent of executives think their chief executive officer needs more HR support.
Recently, consultancy firm Ceridian called on HR directors to focus on employee engagement during the economic downturn as workers could become unhappy.
