A number of financial services firms are set to use Sony's PlayStation 3 to hold online meetings.
In a move which might interest accountancy recruitment staff, the companies, including Ernst & Young, will use the console's virtual world Home to host management conferences.
The scheme, which is part of a project led by Dr Nipan Maniar and Manish Malik from Portsmouth University, is aimed at cutting carbon emissions.
Andrew Mawson, managing director of Advanced Workplace Associates which commissioned the study, said: "Audio and video-conferencing solutions have emerged but the use of virtual worlds may offer the next evolution in overcoming the tyranny of distance."
Increasingly, workers need to collaborate on a global scale, he added.
Recently, Chris Lane, spokesperson for Kingston Smith, told Accountancy magazine, that financial services companies could benefit from joining the government-subsidised High Growth scheme.
He told the news provider the project could help companies survive the economic downturn.
