Enhance IT skills for jobseeking advantage

Jobseekers have been urged to improve their IT skills in a bid to gain a competitive advantage in the employment market.
BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, said that with unemployment standing at 2.61 million, competition for jobs is likely to be even tougher in the coming months.
As such, the organisation is encouraging workers and recent students to make sure their IT skills are fully up to scratch.
Martyn Lambert, director of qualifications at BCS, said that although employment figures show that things are starting to improve, competition for every job "is still very strong".
"It pays to be able to prove that you have relevant qualifications, especially ones in IT that employers want," he stated.
BCS claimed that, based upon recent e-Skills research, 77 per cent of roles today require some element of IT.
This means that many employers are looking for people who are digitally literate, the institute stated.
"We all think that we're digitally literate, we can use Facebook and know how to tweet, but there’s much more to applying IT in the workplace," Mr Lambert stated.
"Employers are looking for people who are able to operate technology whether that’s inputting data, using a computer-based till, or producing information on a spreadsheet or word document."
He said gaining qualifications that help people prove their skills to potential employers can help them gain the competitive edge in a job hunt.
"Research [from YouGov] has shown that vocational qualifications are comparable to academic qualifications in helping to achieve promotion and a pay rise," Mr Lambert stated.
