Employee skills are being viewed as increasingly important to businesses, it has been suggested.
Simon Bartley, chief executive of UK Skills, said that the application and relevance of competences "has never, ever been higher" than in the current environment.
He added that after a period in the last 20 to 25 years "where skills have been the poor relation ? the Cinderella of learning in the United Kingdom", employers are now recognising their importance.
"The recession has brought [the issue] to a much wider audience," Mr Bartley commented.
This covers not only individuals ? who are interested in skills for their own personal development ? and businesses, but also parents, teachers, government departments and local authorities, he said.
"Everybody now realises that for the United Kingdom - as a country, as employers and as individuals ? development of skills is something that is core to their future," he added.
Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, recently claimed that employers should be looking to provide employees with simple training programmes in order to further their development.
