Employees target better work-life balance

HR professionals will have to help their firms deliver a better work-life balance to employees if new research is anything to go by.
A study by telecoms firm O2 has found that 71 per cent of workers think Britons have reassessed what makes them happy because of the recession.
It also suggested that people are less willing to sacrifice their home lives for monetary rewards, with 58 per cent of respondents stating they would choose to earn less cash if they could work for a firm which gives them time to pursue their own interests.
Ann Picketing, HR director at Telefonica O2 UK, believes that the recession will lead to fundamental changes in the way people think about work.
She said: "The onset of recession in Britain led to significant changes for many of us.
"Whilst there is speculation that there's a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, the last 12 months will have had a long-lasting effect."
If firms are able to offer an improved work-life balance, then they could be able to attract unhappy workers from their competitors.
A recent study by the Hay Group UK revealed that many people feel they have been pushed to the limit by their employer and around a third are currently looking for a new job.
