Employees 'recognise benefits of talent management...Talent management programmes have been given the thumbs-up, in a new study conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

In a study of 300 employees, including both participants and those not taking part, the organisation found strong positive sentiment towards such initiatives.

Some 81 per cent of respondents said talent management programmes make them feel more engaged at work, with 52 per cent believing that development schemes can help them make faster career progress.

Half of those surveyed said the initiatives exist primarily to help them develop in their managerial roles, with the other half believing they are designed mainly to prepare them for a future role.

And of those currently participating in a talent management programme, 78 per cent believe they can improve networking, 72 per cent think they can help develop new skills, and 62 per cent they can offer benefits through a challenging experience.

The study also found that human resources departments have a key role to play in the delivery of such schemes.

Respondents said they thought HR involvement can improve the running of talent management programmes, and their perception within the organisation as a whole.

Claire McCartney, resourcing and talent planning adviser at CIPD, said it is "encouraging" that leadership support and sponsorship of talent initiatives was strong across all the organisations surveyed.

"Support across divisions and between line managers, however, is inconsistent, which could compromise the effectiveness of programmes," she said.

"HR's role in communication, raising awareness and educating line managers will help address this."

Ms McCartney said that HR needs to actively support peer groups represented on the talent programmes - often the highest performing employees across the business - to continue to meet and network beyond the programme.

"This will help organisations get the most out of groups that have participated in talent programmes, harnessing their energy and creativity for business success," she stated.

Earlier this week, Tom Keebler, global practice leader in Towers Watson's HR department, claimed that talent management technologies have become "one of the best ways" for companies and HR departments to drive better employee performance and enterprise success.
