Councils 'must be made to use newspaper advertising'

Councils 'must be made to use newspaper...MSPs have criticised a Scottish Government proposal to allow councils to advertise exclusively on the internet.

Under the plan, local government bodies will no longer be required to post details of jobs, planning applications and road closures in newspapers, reports the Scotsman.

Critics say such a move would not only "kill off" the local media, but also enable controversial decisions to be made without full public scrutiny.

Conservative MSP Ted Brocklebank said investigative journalism would suffer as a consequence of the change.

It is "simply a matter of fact" that the internet is "a less effective communication channel than the local paper", he claimed.

Liberal Democrat culture spokesman Iain Smith described the proposals as "misconceived, undemocratic and frankly wrong".

According to media regulator Ofcom, around four in ten Scottish residents do not yet have access to a broadband connection.
