Cloud computing can boost UK job creation

Cloud computing can boost UK job creationCloud computing developments are set to have benefits not only for individual businesses but the UK economy as a whole, it has been reported.

According to the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), cloud developments will promote economic growth, increase productivity and shift the type of jobs and skills required by businesses.

Research conducted by the university looked at the impact of cloud computing on the smartphone services industry.

LSE found that the rate of growth in job creation will be 349 per cent over the next four years in this market, as cloud technologies become more important.

Some 4,040 jobs are set to be created as a direct impact of cloud developments within the smartphone industry alone, the school reported.

It said that in order to harness the potential of the cloud, policymakers need to improve education and retraining in e-skills, provide incentives for companies to adopt green energy practices, and ensure data transfer policies do not impede the development of the sector.

John Vassallo, vice-president of EU affairs at Microsoft, said cloud computing and the explosion in access to technology is impacting the character of work across industries, generating new skills demands, employment and growth opportunities.

"LSE's study underscores these phenomena using rigorous economic analysis that forecasts growth as a result of the transition to cloud technologies," he stated.

"Europe has real opportunity to capture the cloud's potential, with particular benefit to small and medium-sized enterprises as well as new business creation through emerging cloud services."

Mr Vassallo said investing in cloud computing is directly creating employment through the construction, staffing and supply of data centres which will host the cloud.

Using cloud computing enables businesses of all sizes to be more productive, by freeing managerial staff and skilled employees to concentrate on more profitable areas of work, he added.
