Clear communication 'helps to build employee morale'

Business leaders seeking to improve employee morale must ensure they communicate clearly and openly with the general workforce, it has been suggested.
Petra Wilton, director of policy and research at the Chartered Management Institute, said effective communication is "absolutely critical" in terms of engaging employees effectively.
The way staff are handled by team leaders and company bosses "fundamentally affects performance and productivity", the HR expert explained.
And too often within businesses and organisations, this communication breaks down, she stated.
"[Employees] are driven by really understanding the company vision and having a sense of purpose in terms of what can be done. It does come down to top leadership needing to take responsibility," Ms Wilson said.
"If there has been a recent change in strategy, or changes because of the recession, then that has to be communicated so that everyone understands that."
She was commenting after research carried out by chrysaliscourses.co.uk, found that one in ten Brits are currently 'unhappy' in their job.
The study also found that a third feel 'completely unappreciated' in their current role and 63 per cent want to change careers as soon as possible.
Unhappy or unhelpful colleagues, long hours and poor pay were found to be the biggest bugbears among UK employees, while three out of ten said the lack of a challenge was dampening their spirits.
In terms of practical responses, Ms John suggested that business managers and HR could organise team bonding days in a bid to build communication channels and raise staff morale.
"These events can combine both the social nature of a nice lunch followed by re-engaging with the [company] strategy," she added.
"They can play a part in actually getting people together and taking them away from their day to day jobs where they perhaps don't always see the big picture because they are too busy delivering on targets."
